Mutarazi Falls is Zimbabwe’s highest waterfall, plunging an astonishing 772 meters into the scenic Honde Valley from the edge of Mutarazi National Park. It ranks as the second tallest waterfall in Africa, after Tugela Falls in South Africa, and 17th in the world. The falls are formed by the Mutarazi River, which flows over the eastern escarpment of Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands. Its two-tiered horsetail drop creates a dramatic spectacle, especially during the rainy season when water flow is at its peak. Beyond its natural beauty, Mutarazi Falls is a hub for adventure tourism. It boasts the world’s highest zip line and a skywalk suspension bridge, offering visitors breathtaking aerial views of the valley below. The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, featuring montane forests, heathlands, and endemic species, making it a prime destination for eco-tourism and photography enthusiasts.

Chikanda Falls

Chikanda Falls is a lesser-known gem nestled within the valley. Unlike Mutarazi’s towering drop, Chikanda Falls is characterized by its serene cascades and lush green surroundings. The falls are fed by streams that meander through dense forests, creating a tranquil environment ideal for picnics and nature walks. The area around Chikanda Falls is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare orchids and bird species, making it a favourite spot for birdwatchers and botanists. Its accessibility and peaceful setting make it perfect for visitors seeking a quiet retreat away.

 Nyamombe Falls

The falls are located in Buwu region along Nyamombe River. The falls tumble over rugged granite outcrops, creating a series of picturesque pools and rapids. Nyamombe Falls is not just a visual delight; it also holds cultural significance for local communities, often featuring in folklore and traditional ceremonies. The surrounding landscape offers excellent hiking opportunities, with trails that provide panoramic views of Honde Valley. The first hydro project in the valley, commissioned in the early 2000s by Nyangani Renewable Energy, is located on Nyamombe River, generating 2.7 MW of power.

Nyangombe Falls

Nyangombe Falls is located in Nyanga National Park and consists of a wide curtain of water cascading over a rocky ledge into a natural swimming pool below. The falls are easily accessible and often serve as a picnic and relaxation spot for families and tourists. The area is equipped with basic facilities, making it convenient for day trips. Nyangombe Falls is also a gateway to several hiking trails that lead deeper into the park, offering opportunities to explore indigenous forests, grasslands, and wildlife habitats. Its combination of beauty, accessibility, and recreational options makes it a must-visit destination in the Eastern Highlands. Visitors can enjoy the cool mountain air and explore nearby attractions such as trout-filled rivers and historical sites within Nyanga.

Together, these waterfalls showcase the diverse natural beauty of Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands, blending adventure, tranquility, and cultural heritage. They offer something for every traveller whether you seek adrenaline-pumping activities at Mutarazi or peaceful moments at Chikanda and Nyamombe.
